They will always be "awful aussies" and the "woeful wallabies" to me. They belong in the Pacific Nations Tournament, not at the top table of world rugby. It was a mistake to start playing them regularly as their cultural values are incompatible with the objectives of the game. .

It was a big surprise/shock in 1963 when John Thornett's Australians side actually drew a series with us in South Africa. The won the 2nd test 9-5 in Cape Town and the third test 11-9 in Johannesburg.

Apart from that one-off series they were woeful in the sixties and seventies. In 1971 (a series on which have plenty of info and about which I plan to post eventually) South Africa toured unbeaten through Australia.

This must have been a warm up series for the Boks ahead of the 1970 All Black tour.

Back in the early 1970s the All Blacks used to take turns to score tries against australia. The New Zealand media referred to them as the "awful aussies" and the "woeful wallabies".

In clip you can see the likes of HO de Viliers, Tommy Bedford, Piet Visagie, Jan Ellis, Eben Olivier and Dirk de Vos. You can see Dirk de Vos doing one of his little chip kicks to produce a try for Piet Visagie.
