South Africa toured at the end of 2010 to play matches against all four the home unions. There was much talk about achieving a grand slam.
The Springbok team were, however, a bit low in confidence after they got annalihated by the All Blacks during the 2010 tri-nation losing two test against them in New Zealand and in South Africa. They also lost a test match against Australia in South Africa. It was not the losing so much as the fact that the Al Blacks and Aussies developed a new style of playing in 2010.
The media were awe of this 'new expansive rugby' the All Blacks was playing and it was clear that the European team were adjusting to this trend.
Structure at the break down and phase play has always been a feature of UK rugby so the new expansive style were easy for the UK teams to take up.
There was a lot of uncertainty in SA and the Springbok camp in just how SA should approach this 2010 EOYT.
The main question was should the stick with their traditional style namely 10-man rugby or should they use this EOYT to try and adjust with the 2011 RWC only 8 months away.
