Interesting.

I think EP was coached by former All Black coach Alex Wylie in the early 90s - they had a torrid game against England in 1994 (?) Tim Rodber - who was tipped to an England captain was sent off for fighting and he never seemed to be the same player after that.

In the Rugby News review of the 76 tour, Bob Howitt labelled the tour a failure as the All Blacks lost the series and did not beat all of the top 5 provinces which he said were WP, Tvl, NTvl, OFS and Natal.

When the Cavaliers played Natal, the fighting was so bad the TVNZ used it footage of it in the introductory credits for the latenight news along with footage of bombs going off and other acts of randomn violence. Afterwards the captain referred to his Natal team as being a "B" division side. .

Anyway, here is a link to 1977 UN film about SA - the opening footage shows Tvl v NTvl - looks like Corrie running on last for Tvl and Gerald Bosch kicking a goal.

Best wishes,

Thanks for this - great to see my hero Corri in full flight. Only just watched the firts few minutes - struck by how rubbish All Black tackling was in those days - will keep watching.

By the way was Eastern Provinnce any good? I just saw the Garth Wright and Danie Gerber tries.

Yip, AB defence in 76 was not even close to what it is today.
EP was one of the top 5 (NTVL, WP, OFS, TVL). Natal was a struggling team in the seventies. Become a dominant power in the second part of the eighties. EP never a Currie Cup winner or finalist but always a hard team to play against but always seems to fade away as the game progresses. More or less on the same level as TVL in those years (1972-1980).
